On the 5th and 6th of September 2021, Parwana hosted fundraising dinners to galvanise support for those remaining in Afghanistan, in response to the unfolding humanitarian crisis as the country’s established government collapsed.

With the incredible support and care of our community we raised $180,000 to provide some emergency care and relief to those within Afghanistan now facing a drastically unsettled and uncertain future. The money has been donated to three Australian registered charities who provide support on the ground in Afghanistan, namely Mahboba’s Promise, Afghan-Australian Development Organisation and Human Appeal.

Our fundraising events were underpinned by the hard work of a dedicated and heartfelt group of volunteers whose efforts spanned setting up, decorating the space, ushering, serving food and drinks to auctioneering, capturing the evening through photography and videography, MCing and so much more.

A special thanks goes to Plant4 Bowden for the generous use of space, and for going above and beyond to make things happen. A very big thank you to Studio OK-OK for partnering with us so effortlessly and with such a deep sense of care from day one.

We thank each and every one of you for your incredible team work, for doing what it took to make things come together, and most of all for your kindness. We pulled together as a community and showed that we can galvanise so meaningfully for others during their time of need. There are more people to thank for their contribution to the fundraising efforts. Together we will have made a difference to those in Afghanistan who most need the world to remember them. We are eternally grateful. Thank you.

Here we share some moments from our evenings together, as well as content showing how the money raised has already provided support to those in Afghanistan.

The money raised is beginning to be distributed in a way that is sustainable and which can be as safe as possible. The team at Mahboba’s Promise has shared some content showing the distribution of food using the money raised through the Parwana for Afghanistan fundraiser to support some of the hundreds of thousands of displaced families in Afghanistan. This is just one way the money is being distributed, and will also include support like providing food packages to last families through winter.

We thank all those in our community who participated in making this critical support a reality for those in dire humanitarian circumstances within Afghanistan.

how to CONTINUE YOUR support

Many of you have asked about how to continue to support Afghanistan. At a local level, consider supporting these organisations which provide direct care to new arrivals (either with donations, or volunteering your time). If you are considering providing support, it would be a good idea to contact them directly to gain an understanding of how you can best support them in their efforts:

Multicultural Youth SA: Providing support to multicultural youth, including new arrival Afghan youth.
Australian Refugee Association: Doing lots of work to support humanitarian visa claims.
AMES: The peak body for the resettlement of new arrival refugees.
Treasure Boxes: Collecting goods to distribute to new arrivals.

To support those within Afghanistan facing dire humanitarian crises, with winter fast approaching, you can make donations directly to Australian registered charities operating on the ground in Afghanistan:

Mahboba's Promise, Afghan-Australian Development Organisation and Human Appeal.
